Week 13

1. ADR stands for Automated Dialogue Replacement

2. Voice talent should stand during recording sessions because it allows the diaphragm to expand which provides more vocal range and gives them freedom of movement so they can give their all into the performance.

3. Numbers should be spelled out on a script to provide clarity on pronunciation and pacing.

4. You could motivate voice over talent by giving them facts about their character/situation, giving them an ‘as if’ to play the scene through, or giving verbs to describe how they should approach it.

5. Similar to live action, voice talent should get feedback before/after every take because then you will see improvement with every take. Without it, they may think a take was perfect, leading them to not try and improve or feel less motivated because they ‘already got it’.

6. Motion picture music includes underscores, pre-existing music, and songs written for the film.

7. 1) Creating a more convincing atmosphere of the time and place. 2) Underlining psychological refinements. 3) Serving as a neutral background filler. 4) Building a sense of continuity. 5) Underpinning the theatrical build up of a scene and rounding it off with a sense of finality.

8. A composer can take initiative by researching the director’s past work, deep-diving into the script, and asking the director about the purpose, point of view and message the music needs to have.

9. A temp track is a free alternative that is similar to what the director envisions as the final soundtrack to provide an example of how the music will contribute to the pacing and tone of the film.

10. Composers should be wary of temp tracks because sometimes the director will get attached to the version of their film they saw with that soundtrack, giving them highly specific expectations of what the soundtrack should be.

11. A spotting session is a when the director writes the spotting notes and cues after discussing the film with the composer. This provides the skeleton of what the composer will try to accomplish.

12. What do you want the music to enhance? What is the message and emotion I’m portraying here?
